Current 9.5mm News

Copies of 9.5mm films can now be produced by Cine Dia in Paris. Prints are produced on colour stock by the contact process so that the copies are projected with emulsion facing the light source (opposite to camera originals). This facility means that it is no longer necessary to send that irreplaceable original film to a competition, a copy can be sent instead - and no splices to worry about - magnetic stripe should be smoother too! UK ninefivers can arrange to send their films via me (Grahame Newnham) if they prefer. Cost is around £1.50 per metre. (Means a 30 metre / 100ft roll would cost £45 approx. plus post, VAT etc.). 14Jan2002

The Wimborne Mini 9.5mm Festival held on Saturday 2nd November 2002 was a popular event.

Here we see the some of the audience and Mavis Spence receiving the audience award for her latest superb 9.5mm film "Rain Forest" filmed on 9.5mm Fuji Velvia.

Yours truly struggling with the Pathescope 17.5mm Home Talkie projector (the machine did actually manage to run a couple of 17.5mm sound films during this talk/demonstration)

Roger Spence demonstrates a Pathe centre start vertical cut record which actually played using Roger's special Pathe pickup. Finally a few of the festival attendees at the Sunday lunch following a very interesting visit to a private 35mm cinema fitted with a Ross projector.

(Many thanks to Lee Mannering for the digital photos)

Scenes from the Argenteuil (Paris) Film Fair held at the end of January 2002

Technical discussion gets serious during the evening soiree (yes that's French!)

The locals seemed to want to get involved with the "Cingles du Cinema" (means 'cinema nutters' I think!

The 9.5mm 2000 Festival held in Enkhuizen, Holland by the Dutch 9.5 Club was a great success!

See below for more information and
the winning 9.5mm amateur films

Over 50 nine-five cine enthusiasts gathered at Enkhuizen, Nederlands for the year 2000 9.5mm International Festival. In addition to the screening of the 9.5mm film entries themselves, there was a special screening of previous prize winning films from earlier years plus some examples of vintage printed and amateur 9.5mm films.

Meetings were held in the lovely old fortified building
the Dromedaris. As well as the cinema room on the top
floor, there were other floors with a cafe and a bar.
Some meals, including the excellent gala dinner, were
held in these unique surroundings.

There were some sixteen 9.5mm amateur film entered in this international competition. Entries arrived from the UK, France, Switzerland, Germany and of course from the host country Nederlands. The three judges gave an excellent summing up of the entries and awarded the various prizes. They mentioned that more 'new' films would be welcome, also more story films. They also suggested that most entries would benefit from a little tighter editing!

First prize went to an entry from the UK by Roger Spence - "Baa!!!", an 18 minute film, shot on Fuji Provia, with excellently prepared stripe sound track, showing an annual Yorkshire sheep trial. In second place was a vintage black & white production "Express", a seven minute film with stripe sound from Paul Goy of Switzerland - a delightful study of children playing trains indoors on a wet day. Third place went to Paul Bigou of France for his excellently shot, Fuji Velvia five minute sound stripe film tribute to Edith Piaff, with visuals shot at a fun fair. The audience award went to Wolf Otte from Germany with his "Kinderbts Disneyl" showing children enjoying Disneyland, Paris. A Golden Scissors editing award, presented by the Dutch 9.5 Club went to "Patte A Chat" from R. Bouffard of France and a special prize presented by the town, was presented to J. Sevin of France for his film "Eau - Soleil".

The festival included various trips including
visits to the traditional Dutch villages of
Marken & Volendam, boat and steam train
rides and Dutch cheese and clog making.
Here the contingent from the UK gather
round a piece of oversize Dutch footwear!

Many thanks to our friends in the Nederlands for an enjoyable 9.5 International Film Festival!

QUERIES

A query was received from a French enthusiast - Jean-Louis Bampoint, who is having trouble projecting certain older 9,5mm printed films (includng some notched titles) on a Heurtier Tri-gauge projector - a SuperTri 58 or 60 by the picture he supplied. (14Aug2000)

I guess the problem may be shrunk film and the fact that the Heurtier has a triple claw making it more difficult to cope with major differences in pitch. However if anyone has more ideas or a simple solution please e-mail!

Well the first query is from me! Does anyone recognise this film box? It's a 60ft/20m 9.5mm short film in a special closed cassette (not Pathe type, but similar). The make is Cinak, and the film is entitled "506 Une Grande Chasse Dessin Anime GB" (A Big or Great Chase - cartoon ) - does the GB mean Great Britain? The running titles are in French and the drawings look very early, like pencil sketches). The film appears to be contact printed from a 9.5mm original. I have four of these intriguing films - help someone please! (Grahame Newnham) (21.03.2000)

Many thanks to Pierre Gauriat, who has E-mailed from France to explain that Cinak were a French firm who made toy 9.5mm projectors in the 1920's. So these little films were intended for these projectors. He points out that we can see a Cinak projector at:- http://www.projectors.fr.fm/ . Pierre has his own 9.5mm web-site at: http://pierreg.free.fr/cine95/
