DEGETO FRENCH
9.5MM FILM CATALOGUE
The Tobis (TOn BIld Syndicat) Company had been formed in Germany in 1928 initially to develop sound film technology for the cinema, with another company Tobis Klang Film arriving in 1929. The advent of the Nazi 3rd Reich, saw it appear to have become part of the well renowned U.F.A. film company. With the German Nazi invasion of France, in 1940 a series of printed films for home use appeared on 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm. These were marketed by the C.G.F.R. (Comptoir General Du Format Reduit - General controller of reduced format - a German company intended to appear French - located at 12, rue de Lubeck, Paris 16) as Tobis Degeto (DEutsche GEsellschaft TOnbild - German sound film company) Smalfilm products and subject to careful censorship. Film content was mostly interest, travel and animated items sourced from Germany and German occupied countries. Degeto may have marketed similar printed films in other occupied countries like The Nederlands, but probably only in 8mm and 16mm. Incidentally Degeto still exists as a European film production and distribution company.
The 9.5mm prints (all black and white silent) seem to have been printed by the usual Pathé method of triple 9.5mm copies on specially perforated 35mm filmstock. The films were packed in a smart red box with gold slide-out container to hold the actual spool and a printed fact sheet (in French) relating to the film (some even suggested suitable music). Many of the subjects were listed as part of the "Le Bonheur Du Jour" series. There was a full catalogue detailing all the titles which were mostly 15 metre 8mm and 30 metre (100 foot) 9.5mm / 16mm versions. A few 55 metre (200 foot) and 120 metre (400ft) titles were also listed in 9.5mm and 16mm.
What is possibly the full catalogue is detailed below, but an Austrian collector once told me that maybe not all the titles were actually released on 9.5mm. Production of these films ceased in 1944. Incidentally there was another 16mm series - war 'newsreels' that used similar numbering.
