LORTAC - ANIMATOR EXTRAORDINAIRE

Looking at some of the very early 9.5mm cartoon releases, those little 30ft notched title films released in the metal cassettes in the very early days of 9.5mm movies, we notice on the credits, the name Lortac.
In fact Lortac was one of the first and perhaps one of the most important of the early French film animators. Born at the cross-channel port of Cherbourg in Northern France on the 19th of November 1884, Lortac's real name was Robert Collard. An initial start in a military career was cut short because of his lack of discipline, being expelled at the age of 16 from Prytanee de la Fleche military academy. Robert then began studying art and painting at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. As a result of this, from around 1906 to 1914 Robert Collard began contributing cartoons and caricatures to newspapers and actors' sketches for theatrical reviews.
Robert Collard began a comedy film in 1914, entitled "Le Savant Microbus et Son Automate" but this was abandoned as he was called up for the French army. Sadly during the warfare, his shoulder was torn off by a shell and Robert was discharged in 1915. Once recovered he began producing animated puppet films in a propaganda drive to encourage civilians to buy war bonds - these items formed part of the "Eclair Journal" newsreels. During this period he met and worked with Emile Cohl and when in the USA raising war funds with an exhibition of enlisted French artists work, he visited American animation studios and saw comic strips in the New York Herald drawn by Winsor McCay (famous for Gertie the Dinosaur).
By 1919, Robert Collard formed his own production company Publi-Cine, mainly to produce short advertising cartoon films. This studio employed around fifteen people, including Andre Rigal and Raoul Guerin and made films for many French companies including Citroen and Nicolas Wines. The studio also made a number of short comic fiction cartoons which were distributed by Pathe, however these were not so profitable and the emphasis was on advertising material.
In 1921 Robert Collard or by now known as Lortac, co-directed with Cavé‚ a 35 minute movie adaptation of the Rodolph Toepfer (1799-1846) cartoon "Monsieur Vieuxbois" for two Swiss amateurs from Geneva, Peyrot and Ehrenhold. Produced by Pencil Film, it has been restored by the Swiss Film Archive after research by its curator Freddy Buache.
From 1922 Pathé in France, often included a "Canard en Cin‚" animated news item from the Lortac studios along with their regular cinema news reels. By the 1930's advertising business was hard hit by the depression. The second world war saw Lortac dispose of his animation business and concentrate on writing scripts for comic books and detective stories - "Bibi Fricotin"; "Bicot", "Les Pieds Nickelés" etc. Lortac died aged 89 in 1973.
Looking at some of his films today he often used the technical revolution that was all around him as ideas for the cartoons. We see jokes about cars, robots, and mechanisation in the home for example. He was really expressing the mixed feelings of contemporary observers to the changing world they were living in. In "L'Aspirator Du Professeur Mecanicas" (UK 9.5mm as "The Exhauster of Professor Mechanist") we see the professor with his modernistic vacuum cleaner - initially it picks up the dust as intended, but soon begins to suck up everything around it - this no doubt must have inspired a similar sequence in the George Dunning's Beatles cartoon feature "The Yellow Submarine" some 45 years later. The professor begins to go bald in another film "La Seve Poilifere" (UK 9.5mm as "The Hair Restorer") - he invents a special elixir, but it is stolen by a lad who creates havoc growing beards on innocent ladies eventually using it on himself to create a disguise to avoid capture.
Some Lortac cartoons were supposed to be social comment - the character Toby seems to enjoy a few whiskies whilst on duty as a policeman. There are two films on UK 9.5mm with this theme "La Consigne de Toby" and "Toby a Soif"(UK 9.5mm as "Toby On Duty" and "Toby Is Thirsty"), possibly from one original film - an early catalogue explains this film could be used by temperance groups to show the evils of drink ("Toby Is Thirsty" does end with a moral about everything in moderation).
UK ninefivers are lucky to have a good number of these Lortac cartoon offerings, most of which arrived in the first 'provisional' UK Pathe 9.5mm film list of 1924, the other titles arriving a little later in the February 1925 'first' 9.5mm UK film sales list. Films include those with 'Toto' (but not "Toto the Cook" a USA comedy from Hal Roach); "Toby is Thirsty"; "Toby on Duty"; the 'Mistoufle' titles and those with Professor Mecanicas (some say this was based on the copyrighted Meccano name). In France Pathé-Baby released at least thirty Lortac cartoons on 9.5mm, with some Spanish and German versions as well; in the UK we have about eighteen Lortac cartoons on 9.5mm, all just 30ft long with notched titles. The exact production date of each film is difficult to discover but all must have been made between 1920 and 1924.
It is interesting that the translation of the Mecanicas titles gets a bit confusing in the UK releases. For example "Le Reveil de Professeur Mecanicas" became "The Awakening of Professor Mechanicas" whilst "Une Invention du Professeur Mecanicas" became "Professor Mechanikas Invention" and "L'Aspirateur du Professeur Mecanicas" became "The Exhauster of Professor Mechanist". To make matters worse, in the later editions of the UK 9.5mm Pathescope film lists from 1928 onwards, the editor decided to rename the Professor 'Mechanikas' whilst the films themselves kept the originally listed UK titles! The Professor Mecanicas films that don't have his name in the title, begin on the film title itself with "The Inventions of Professor Mechanicas" then the title like "The Hair Restorer" or "The Servant's Crisis".

These little Lortac 9.5mm cartoons began to be dropped from the UK film catalogues after 1930, dissapearing for ever from the mid-thirties, chased out by Felix and Mickey Mouse releases. Another bit of interesting film history for nine-five collectors to seek out.
